Abbie Steuhm is an University of Iowa alumni with an MA in Library & Information Sciences and a BA in English & World Literature (with a concentration in Literature & Media).

They currently reside in Madison, South Dakota working as a Research & Scholarship Librarian for Dakota State University’s Library.


Library Experience

Research & Scholarship Librarian for the Karl E. Mundt Library (Jul. 2023-Present)

Assists in planning, implementing, promoting, and assessing the services and resources provided by the library to the DSU campus to promote life-long learning.

Research Assistant for the University of Iowa Labor Center (Aug. 2022- Jun. 2023)

Researched various topics related to Iowa’s Workers’ Compensation laws, particularly in relation to shoulder injuries in the meat-packing industry. Compiled research into a publishable, academic journal article to be presented at the Iowa Workers’ Compensation Advisory Committee Symposium.

Student Specialist for the Iowa Women’s Archives (Sept. 2021-Jun. 2023)

Updated and cleaned the archive’s digital reference database, and carefully handled and processed archival materials both physical and born-digital, all in order to aid patrons’ requests with ease and precision. Aided in processing the oral histories of Black female domestics during the Jim Crow era and captioning the Women at Iowa collection for the Iowa Digital Library.

Research Assistant for the “Public Libraries for Disaster Resilience: Assessing Libraries’ Community Impacts in Times of Climate and Socio-Economic Crises” project (Aug. 2021- Nov. 2022)

Gathered and organized raw data on public libraries, as well as interviewed multiple library directors to analyze the effectiveness of public libraries in Midwestern communities and develop new policies and programs based off that analysis.

Library Assistant for NYC Human Resources Administration’s McMillan Library (Sept. 2018- Aug. 2021)

Developed the McMillan Digital Library, along with updating and implementing a new organization system for both physical and digital files to create greater accessibility to the library for its patrons.


Editing Experience

Art Director for the TwoTwoOne.nyc Digital Journal (Spring 2021)

Producing a portfolio of sample designs according to instruction given by the editorial team, and editing the website layout and images, resulting in a glossy new journal issue that represented its chosen theme “RE-“.

Editor for The Carson Review Literary Magazine (Spring 2021)

Collaborated with a board of editors in voting on submissions that fell in line with our volume’s image, as well as editing chosen submissions in order to produce a fully fleshed-out magazine in record time.


Leadership Experience

President of UI Students for Disability Advocacy & Awareness (UISDAA) (Oct. 2021- Feb. 2023)

Cooperating with fellow executives in planning and organizing community events and comprehensive plans for disability advocacy to accomplish the goal of creating a stable and safe environment for the disabled community at the University of Iowa. Duties include moderating a community Discord server, as well as designing and updating a website to display resources for disabled students and archive past UISDAA events.

Secretary and Social Media Director for the Marymount Manhattan College Film Club (Aug. 2020- May 2021)

Planning interdisciplinary events, along with weekly meetings, and filling the club’s Instagram page with handmade flyers and graphics. Also, supervising small film groups and training freshmen on handling film equipment, all to help in producing a final short film by the semester’s end.
